I am Geraldine, Geraldine Lacave, and I am a veterinarian.
I am a specialist, if I may say so,
and I have been working with marine mammals for over 30 years now.
I’ve been coming to Loro Parque for 10 years now
to assist with the orcas, as I am a consultant.
Morgan is pregnant and we are performing comprehensive monitoring of her condition.
In the situation of Morgan, our task is to review her state using a scanner
which allows us to see the baby inside, just as it happens with pregnant women.
We do it frequently as it does not involve any harmful diagnostic method,
and it can be repeated as many times as needed.
This is what we are doing right now.
Apart from that, we also have a list that we coordinate with other parks
and this list contains information about different aspects to be controlled when a birth is anticipated.
We are monitoring the temperature of the animal, because normally there appears to be
a decrease of 1º degree of the body temperature of the animal about 24 hours before the delivery,
so that information is incredibly valuable for us.
In the same way, we find it useful to measure the circumference of different parts of her body,
because as it has been observed or could be deduced from the little background information available,
a few weeks before the birth,
the circumference of a certain part of her body will grow considerably.
The animal is very well trained
to give blood samples.
It is very easy, the animal gets into position and with a little needle
we take a blood sample that allows us to follow the progression of her.
We also have a behavior control to determine whether the animal is swimming differently or not,
how her relationship with the rest of the orcas is developing, whether she contracts or flexes her body;
it is all listed in the checklist so that we can determine what needs to be done in any given situation.
One more thing that we do is we monitor the measurement between both breast apertures
because in the final stage of the gestation, just a few days before the birth, the mother will be ready
to have her offspring and she will start producing more milk and this aperture will grow bigger.
So if we start noticing that the distance between them has grown,
we will take steps to get ready for the upcoming birth.
