BMW Wants to Sell Half a Million Hybrids and Electric Cars by 2019

German carmaker BMW (bmwyy) aims to more than double the number of electric and hybrid vehicles it has sold to 500,000 by the end of 2019, Chief Executive Harald Krüger told German weekly WirtschaftsWoche.

In 2018 alone, deliveries of electrified vehicles are to rise by a “medium double-digit percentage,” he said.

A pioneer in electric cars, BMW launched the i3 hatchback in 2013 but sales have been relatively low and management has wrestled with whether to go all-out for electrification.

But that changed in September when the Munich-based group said it would gear up for mass production of electric cars and aimed to have 12 fully electric models by 2025 with a range of up to 700 km.

The group said on Monday it had hit its target of selling 100,000 fully electric cars this year around the world, benefiting from strong demand in western Europe and the U.S. for models such as the i3 and the 2-series plug-in hybrid Active Tourer.

He said the carmaker would nonetheless keep making and selling cars with combustion engines to help finance a gradual shift to electrified cars.

Unlike his peer Matthias Mueller, the CEO of Volkswagen, he rejected the idea of doing away with tax subsidies for diesel.

“Bearing customers in mind who bought diesels, that is unjustifiable,” Krueger said.

Mueller earlier this month called for subsidies for diesel vehicles to be shifted gradually to incentives for green cars, such as electric vehicles.

Acting Transport Minister Christian Schmidt had shot down the idea, though, saying that diesel was still needed during the transition to greener vehicles and that there was therefore no reason to change tax rules.

Faraday Future expats spin off a new electric car startup

Over the past few months, things appeared to be out of control at the high-profile electric car startup Faraday Future. The new leadership brought in by billionaire founder Jia Yueting, including Stefan Krause, former BMW and Deutsche Bank CFO, and BMW’s head of EVs, Ulrich Kranz, along with several other high-profile employees, left in masses.

Now, sources have told Electrek that those same Faraday Future expats are launching their own electric car startup.

The circumstance surrounding this new startup is apparently directly linked to Krause’s departure from FF.

As we previously reported, the longtime financial exec was brought on board to straighten up the company’s finances, but sources say that he faced important roadblocks from FF founder Jia Yueting, also known as YT.

YT was better known as the founder of LeEco, a Chinese tech giant, but as the company’s financial troubles got out of control over the last year, YT had to resign from his leading role at the company and instead moved to California to focus on Faraday Future, which is still under his control.

Earlier this month, YT’s profile in China was hit even harder when the government placed him on a debt blacklist, which is a way to shame affluent Chinese business people and block them from engaging in reckless spending.

With his position in China growing weaker, it looked like YT turned to his US EV startup to build his empire back up.

That’s while Krause was trying to raise money for the company in order to bring its first vehicle, the FF91, to production.

But sources say that while Krause made some progress to raise capital, deals fell through because they were contingent on YT resigning or giving up a controlling part in the company, which is something he refused to do.

Last month, FF sent out a press release announcing that they terminated Krause’s employment and they were looking into legal actions against him:

“Stefan Krause’s possible violation of law and lack of contribution to FF’s goals over the course of his leadership since March has led to severe damages to the interests of FF and its investors. FF is currently taking legal actions as a result of Stefan Krause’s malfeasance and dereliction of duty.”

At the time, Krause responded by stating that his employment wasn’t terminated and that he had instead quit a month earlier.

Now, sources have told Electrek that he launched his own electric car startup called ‘EVELOZCITY’.

The startup has now a very simple website online with the following “vision”:

“Design, develop and deliver the most competitive, capable, connected and clean mobility device for the next generation.”

Sources say that he was able to raise funds using the groundwork that he had done on the previous deals that he tried to close for FF, but that ended up failing due to disagreements with YT.

With a reportedly significant financial backing and preferring Krause’s leadership over YT’s, sources say that several high-profile Faraday Future executives and employees are following Krause to EVELOZCITY and that more could come.

We are told that Richard Kim, FF’s former head designer, Bill Strickland, a former Ford executive who joined FF last year to lead its vehicle line, and Sohel Merchant, a former Tesla engineer who led vehicle engineering at FF, all joined the new startup.

We reached out to the company for a comment on the founding of their new startup. We will update if we get an answer.

On the other hand, now YT claims to have managed to raise $1 billion for FF despite his financial troubles – though it’s still unconfirmed at this point.

Electrek’s Take

The world of EV startups is starting to get crazy and FF was its poster child for a while. Not so much anymore.

As we reported last month when FF seemed close to its last breath, even though the company has been in financial trouble for the better part of the last 2 years, its 1,000+ employees haven’t been sitting on their hands during that time and have developed some interesting EV technologies showcased in the FF91.

While the company might never deliver anything, hopefully, their work on the FF91 leads to something.

But there’s also one other thing that we always admired about FF: the company’s ability to attract top talent.

Now, it looks like EVELOZCITY is going to be where some of that talent is going to end up. Stay tuned to Electrek as we follow their progress.

Canada’s 2019 Nissan Altima Gets Standard AWD But Not The VC-Turbo Engine – Duration: 2:26.

The all-new 2019 Altima comes equipped with all-wheel drive as standard in Canada

That’s not entirely due to the country’s proverbial cold climate, however.Nissan Canada is hoping the 2019 Altima will provide an alternative to crossovers and SUVs, in addition to luring buyers who want all-wheel drive but prefer a more traditional sedan

In the United States, the new Altima offers all-wheel drive as an option.”We really wanted to make the Altima stand out in the segment, so we decided to make it standard across all models,” Nissan Canada’s deputy general manager Brent Smith explained to Automotive News Canada

The executive added that Canadian consumers see AWD as an increasingly important purchase decision

While Nissan hopes the AWD Altima will steal sales from crossovers and SUVs, it doesn’t worry about the sedan cannibalizing sales from its own crossovers

According to Smith, the bulk of sales will be conquests from rival sedans and crossovers, particularly among buyers who choose a crossover only to get AWD

Obviously, the new Altima is also expected to attract previous Altima buyers.Interestingly, none of the Altima’s main competitors, which include the Toyota Camry, Mazda6, Chevrolet Malibu and Honda Accord, offer all-wheel drive

The only sedan in the segment that comes with standard AWD is the Subaru Legacy.Unlike the United States, however, in Canada, the 2019 Altima doesn’t offer the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo four-cylinder gasoline engine as an option, because it’s not available with all-wheel drive

Instead, all Altima models sold in Canada feature the 188-hp 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder unit

The 2019 Nissan Altima starts at C$29,793 (including destination) in Canada, making it only slightly more expensive than its rivals

Nissan Juke Turned Into A Snowmobile For Tokyo Auto Salon – Duration: 1:38.

In two weeks, the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon will officially open its gates.Nissan will, of course, be present at its home country’s event and, like other manufacturers that will attend the show, will display a few custom projects

One of them is the Juke Nismo RSnow, a muscled-up version of the subcompact SUV only with tracks instead of wheels

The concept car features fender flares as well, along with a roof rack with LED lights, and wears a two-tone paintjob, combining white with matte black and somee vibrant green accents

Nissan seems to have a soft spot for fitting their vehicles with tracks instead of wheels

Last year, they presented the Rogue Trail Warrior Concept at the New York Auto Show, which succeeded the Rogue Warrior Concept unveiled in Canada in 2016

Joining the Juke Nismo RSnow at the 2019 Tokyo Auto Salon will be the X-Trail Naomi Osaka Concept, along with the Leaf Nismo RC and Formula E electric racers

Moreover, Nissan’s lineup will also include a number of other vehicles like the Elgrand Sports Premium and Leaf Autech as well as a selection of production models like the GT-R Special Edition, X-Trail, Serena and Note, and the Leaf Nismo, Note e-Power Nismo S and Serena Nismo

2019 Nissan Altima Challenges 2019 Toyota Camry For Family Car Supremacy – Duration: 2:06.

Reviews of the all-new 2019 Nissan Altima have been positive so far.The sixth-generation Altima is not only miles better than its predecessor, but it also has the potential to upset the established order in the midsize sedan segment

Speaking of hierarchy, the new Altima needs to beat the 2019 Toyota Camry if Nissan wants to claim the crown in this highly-contested segment that has been mostly a Japanese affair for many years now

As the segment’s best-seller, the Camry is a tough nut to crack, especially with its redesign for the 2018 model year

So, does the new Altima have what it takes to dethrone the Camry? To answer this question, Redline Reviews pitted the two Japanese sedans against each other

Both are in range-topping trims; the Altima is in Platinum VC-Turbo guise with the turbo-four engine, while the Camry is V6 XLE

While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the reviewer found the cabin of the Camry a more enjoyable place to be

The fit and finish are better, as is the quality of the materials. For example, the Altima features a cheap-looking fake wood trim and the leather on the steering wheel feels like vinyl rather than real leather

On the other hand, the Nissan offers a better infotainment system than the Toyota

It integrates both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto while the Camry only comes with Apple CarPlay connectivity — and only starting with the 2019 model year

Interior space is also slightly better in the new Altima. Can the all-new Altima beat the popular Camry for the title of the best family car in the U

Of Rain and Kings. The 2017 Amelia Island Concours.

In my visit to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance I was greeted with what
could most likely be a hard to beat gathering of some of the finest automobiles
gathered in one place. This wasn’t my first visit to Amelia Island. However,
this year’s concours could best be described as a perfect storm. Quite
literally. With an approaching storm for Sunday’s concours the event was moved
up a day to Saturday March 11th. It was a bold move that paid off for the
organizers.

Also adding to the excitement of the event was a collection of some of my all-time
favorite automobiles. Starting off with the exciting film car class. Cars from
some of my favorite films were represented. Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman’s
Buick Roadmaster from Rain man. The Ferrari 365 Daytona Spyder from The Gumball
Rally. Steve McQueen’s Rolls Royce from the Thomas Crown Affair and the Porsche
917 from LeMans! I mean what beats that? Well only what may well be the most
recognized film car in the world. The Aston Martin DB5 from Goldfinger.
Complete with lethal accessories. It was all there.

Then came the race cars. The race car feature of the now defunct Brumos
Porsche race team was represented in force. Not one, but 13 team cars were on
hand representing the first Brumos racer all the way up to the final. Also, on
hand was Brumos driver and concours judge Hurley Haywood. While my heart drives
me to rear engined, aircooled cars, there’s still more to be had.
Then throw in the special class for the Race Cars of Japan. BRE Datsuns, Bob
Sharp Datsuns, Paul Newman’s Datsun 510 and Nissan 300ZX, the Mazda 787 B. I
was fortunate to meet two of my racing heroes who were on hand as well. Tommy
Kendal and the legendary John Morton. Pete Brock, who I’ve had the opportunity
to meet several times in the past and now call a friend was also on hand as
well as comedian and Japanese car vintage racer Adam Carolla brought a handful
of his fleet to display, including the aforementioned ex Paul Newman 300ZX. What
a line up!

Then out of left field comes the 1911 Marmon Wasp, winner of the first ever
Indianapolis 500. Right in front of me. The history this car has seen in its
life time just astounds me. And speaking of Indianapolis, that brings me to the
honored guest of 2017, Mr Al Unser. As the honored guest, a huge gathering of
his former race cars was on hand. Seeing his Johnny Lightning Indy cars of the
60s to his Pikes Peak dirt racer. His IROC Camaro, the famous yellow Pennzoil
Penske-March to my favorite, the 1987 Porsche Project 2708. A very rare car to
see today. But then I saw, shining like a star in the night. The Borg Warner
Trophy. The prize for winning the Indy 500. There it was, sitting among all
these Unser race cars. I never in my wildest dreams thought that I would get to
stand next this legendary award.

After shaking hands with Mr. Unser and gabbing an autograph and some
pictures, I was back on the show field. There were more hidden gems to be
found. Another special display showcasing the Jaguar D-type and XKSS showed me
another Steve McQueen ride. His infamous Jaguar XKSS. The car that the police
chief of Los Angeles offered a $100 bounty to any officer that could catch
McQueen speeding in this car. Here it was, just as it was the last time the
King of cool drove it.
And speaking of Kings. I also found two other royal rides of very different
disciplines. The first was the 1941 Cadillac limousine known as the Duchess.
This special was built by General Motors especially for the Duke and Duchess of
Windsor. It may have been American, but it screamed British Royalty. The next
was the long thought lost BMW 507 formerly owned by Elvis Presley. The car was
found literally in a barn and was restored to its as delivered condition by
BMW.

Another feature of the concours, typically held the day before is the Cars
and Coffee event. Held on another section of the golf course, this event was
also well attended with over 200 cars in attendance. Including a Jaguar XK220
and a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testarossa.

At the end of the day it came down to the winners. With the Best of Show
awards going to Dano Davis’s 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 Lungo Spider and Terence
Adderley’s 1935 Duesenberg SJ 852.

I greatly enjoyed my time at the 22nd annual Amelia Island Concours
d’Elegance and congratulate Bill Warner and his team for putting on another
fantastic event. The dates for the 2018 event is scheduled for March 9-11 2018.

Cars Yeah podcast

I had the opportunity to sit down a couple weeks back with Mark Greene, host of Cars Yeah, a podcast about inspiring automotive enthusiasts. It’s hard for me to sit down and blow my own horn to tell a story about myself, but when it’s a structured interview. Well that’s a different story. I enjoyed being able to tell some stories about my journey with cars and it was an awesome experience. If you have ever wondered what makes me tick, take a listen to Cars Yeah. There was too much to sit down and tell in one sitting, so Mark and I should definitely sit down again. Take a listen.
